Big Things

Sunday, May 11th, 2008

Hi everyone!
As you all know I work at Big Brothers Big Sisters and have for a long time. We currently have over 30 Little Brothers waiting for Big Brothers at our agency, so we have a recruiting competition going on with the staff to see who can recruit the most Big Brothers by the end of the month.  This is actually my fault because it was my idea.  It seems the best way to get Bigs is through word of mouth or for current Bigs to recruit new Bigs.   So we decided to all try to get the word out.

Since Big Brothers Big Sisters is pretty much all I talk about anymore, most of you know the whole spiel already, but it’s a great organization.   Basically we put adult mentors in the lives of kids who need extra support in their lives.  We ask for a commitment of at least 2x a month for at least a year, and basically you just spend time with your “Little” and do things you both enjoy like go to the movies, make crafts, play basketball, play video games, whatever…  It’s more flexible than a lot of volunteer opportunities in terms of you fitting it into your schedule on your time, but it’s much more of an emotional commitment than other volunteer opportunities on the other hand. You have a kid counting on you and consistency is one of the most important things.  But it’s such a big payout! It can make such a big difference in someone’s life.

Anyway, sorry to use my blog for solicitation, but most of you who I know read it would make amazing Bigs, so I thought I’d at least spread the word. I know few of you live around here, but Bigs are needed everywhere.  Pass on the word too! This website has a lot of good stories (and BBBS e-cards!). The first story on the Real Life Stories page is about the CEO of the current agency I’m at.  http://www.bbbs.org/site/c.diJKKYPLJvH/b.1539751/k.BDB6/Home.htm

Thanks everybody!
